My name is Mireille B. Lauture, PhD. I am thrilled to be sharing my rich Haitian culture with the world through children’s literature. My books are written to entertain, educate, preserve a culture and to instill moral values.
During my childhood years in Haiti, folktales were orally passed on from generation to generation. At that time, Haitian Creole was only a spoken language which means that none of those stories could be documented with their authenticity in our literature.
When Haitian Creole became a full-fledged language with syntax and grammar, I decided to record some of the stories that my mom used to narrate during my childhood years and pass them on to the next generation. Hence, the publication of five bilingual books written in Haitian Creole/English for children aged 4 to 10 years. Each story ends with a moral. Those stories have recently been translated in French and Spanish (side by side) with the goal of gathering a larger group of children around our reading tables.
I am excited to have established a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization – Mancy’s Haitian Folktale Collection, Inc., -which will facilitate provision of charitable donations of my bilingual books to needy children all over the world, starting with Haiti. I look forward to partnering with generous donors, supporters of literacy, who will help encourage our children to learn.
